Ways to Get Riverton Death Records

Riverton death records can be requested in person, by mail, or online. Each method has the same eligibility requirements and fees. The difference is mainly in speed and convenience.

In-person requests at the South Redwood Public Health Center or either of the other two county offices allow same-day service. You must present a valid, current government-issued photo ID. Acceptable forms include a driver's license, passport, military ID, or permanent resident card, among others. You also need proof of your relationship to the deceased. If you are the surviving spouse listed on the Riverton death certificate at the time of death, no relationship documentation is needed beyond your ID. Adult children and siblings must provide their own birth certificates to establish the family connection.

Mail requests require you to send a fully completed application form, a legible photocopy of your ID, legible copies of your proof-of-relationship documents, and a check or money order payable to the Salt Lake County Health Department. Do not include cash or credit card information in a mail request. Write "ATTN: VITAL RECORDS" on the envelope. Mail to any county health office. The county returns certified copies by mail after processing.

Online requests go through VitalChek. VitalChek is the official online ordering service for Utah vital records and accepts credit cards. The fee for a Riverton death certificate is $30 for the first copy and $10 for each additional copy in the same order. Proof of relationship is still required and is verified as part of the VitalChek process.

Note: Since August 21, 2024, Salt Lake County requires proof of relationship for every vital records request, including Riverton death certificates. This is a change from earlier procedures.

Riverton Historical Death Records

Riverton was settled in the 1860s as part of the broader Salt Lake Valley pioneer expansion. For many decades it was an unincorporated community, which means historical records for Riverton deaths were recorded under Salt Lake County. Utah began formal statewide death registration in 1905. Death certificates for the Riverton area from 1904 through 1966 are available in the FamilySearch Utah Death Records collection. This database is free to search and includes scanned images of original certificates.

Before 1905, local records such as LDS ward registers and cemetery records are the primary sources for Riverton deaths. The Family History Library in Salt Lake City holds large collections of these early documents. Researchers may also find useful death-related information in pioneer diaries, land records, and newspaper obituaries from early Salt Lake County history.

Records older than 50 years are open to public access under Utah Code 26-2-22. The Utah Code governing vital records access, including restrictions and exceptions, is also addressed in Utah Code 26-2-13. For records not held by the county or included in FamilySearch, the Utah Division of Archives and Records Service is the next point of contact.

What Riverton Death Certificates Show

Certified Riverton death certificates contain all the standard fields required under Utah vital records law. The certificate is printed on security paper and carries an official seal, making it legally valid for estate, insurance, government, and court purposes.

Fields include the full legal name of the deceased, date of birth, date and place of death, age, sex, race, marital status, Social Security number (modern records), father's name, mother's maiden name, informant's name and relationship, last known residence, occupation, cause of death, contributing causes, manner of death, certifying physician's signature, and place of final disposition (burial, cremation, or other).

Riverton death certificates are accepted for insurance claims, bank account closures, estate settlements, pension and Social Security benefit claims, vehicle or real estate transfers, and genealogical research. The CDC guide to Utah vital records explains how and where Utah death certificates are used across government and private institutions.
